Case Study: Legal Firm
Our client is a young yet experienced, pro-active and client-driven mid-sized law firm.
Issued out of a blend of business lawyers and litigators, they offer each client a tailor made personal service.
ONCALL was contacted by the client and asked to provide urgent translation of appeal documents totalling over 23,500 words from Dutch (Flemish) to English (US) for an ongoing court case. The client requested a turnaround of 4 working days.
Legal Terminology: due to the nature of the documentation, it was vital that ONCALL selected translators who were specialists with Litigation terminology.
Scanned documents: as some of the documents provided were scanned pdf’s, this made it more difficult to obtain an accurate word count and for the translator to replicate the document format in the translation.
Tight Turnaround: ONCALL usually works to a turnaround of 2000 words per language per day to ensure a high quality translation whereas the client required 23,500 words to be delivered in 4 working days (5,875 words per day).
Proofreading: as standard, all translated documentation via ONCALL is subject to proofreading by a second independent linguist. Additional time was also required for this to take place.
Language Combination: as a European based translation and interpreting agency, ONCALL is more accustomed translating into English (UK) whereas the client required translation into English (US).
Working with over 4,500 translators and interpreters globally, ONCALL has access to one of the largest and most diverse databases of linguists available who are all specialists in their particular field. This meant that the ONCALL Project Manager was able to filter their criteria and then check the specific litigation experience of each translator in the required language combination to select the best translators for the task.
ONCALL is adept at working with different file types and ensures that all formatting is checked in the translated document before submitting to the client to verify respect of the original document. This forms part of our standard operational procedure in line with our accreditation to ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management Systems.
Before accepting the translation, the ONCALL Project Manager checked availability of all of our applicable translators to confirm that we would be able to deliver within the required timeframe. Furthermore, using our Translation Memory tool which identifies repetitions and matches with previous translations meant that we were able to reduce turnaround for the client. Using a team of translators working on the document simultaneously meant that ONCALL was able to agree to the tight turnaround, equally allowing for a full proofread at the end checking for terminology consistency, register, grammar, spelling and syntax.
Whilst the language combination was slightly obscure, ONCALL was still able to select appropriately qualified and experienced translators from the extensive internal database who were able to work with the language pairs Dutch (Flemish) to English (US).
ONCALL translated over 80,000 words, always working to the client’s tight deadlines, and even providing delivery on weekends!
Due to the flexibility and coordination of the ONCALL Project Management team and the quality and speed of translations produced, this client has continued to come back for further translations related to this case. During August-October 2014, ONCALL translated over 80,000 words, always working to the client’s tight deadlines, and even providing delivery on weekends!
Furthermore, ONCALL has been able to assist with translating documentation for another case with this firm, Dutch (Flemish) to Polish.
